Picking a pattern comes down to three questions. How long is the shift: 8, 10, 12 or 24 hours? The 24-hour patterns (48/96, 24/48, Kelly) belong to fire and EMS and are paid under different overtime rules; the 8-hour Continental is a plant schedule; everything else is twelves, except the 4×10 compressed week.

How long do you want to work in a row, and how long do you want off? The 2-2-3 and Pitman never go past three shifts and give every other weekend off. DuPont trades a 72-hour week for seven days off. Four on, four off and 5-5-4 give longer breaks for longer blocks; 14 on, 14 off is the extreme. Three twelves is the hospital standard and never crosses 40 hours.
