How the Continental rotation works
The Continental is an 8-hour pattern for a 24-hour, seven-day operation staffed by four crews. Over 28 days each crew works seven consecutive day shifts, takes two days off, works seven evening shifts, takes two off, works seven night shifts, and takes three off. Twenty-one shifts, seven days off, and a rotation that moves forward around the clock: days to evenings to nights.
Three crews are always working, one per shift, and one is on a break, which is why four crews are needed for three shifts. The crews are staggered a week apart, so when your crew moves from days to evenings the crew behind you moves onto days. The generator's crew buttons step through that seven-day stagger.
Forward rotation is deliberate. Moving from a day shift to an evening shift, and from an evening to a night, delays your sleep rather than advancing it, which most people adjust to more easily. The three-day break after the night week gives time to reset before the next day week begins.
Hours, overtime, and what it pays
Twenty-one shifts of 8 hours is 168 hours per 28-day cycle, an average of 42 a week, the same total as the 12-hour Pitman and DuPont patterns. The shape is different: seven-day blocks mean a calendar week that coincides with a block is 56 hours, and the table above shows how the overtime range moves as the workweek start shifts against the cycle.
Overtime at a 40-hour threshold is paid at time and a half on the regular rate, which must include the evening and night differentials earned that week. Because all seven nights fall together on a Continental, the differential week and the heaviest week can be the same week, which makes the night block the highest-paid part of the cycle by a wide margin. Some plants schedule the Continental as five-day blocks with a fifth crew, or pay the seventh shift of each block at a contractual premium, to reduce fatigue and overtime. If yours does, the cycle here will not match and your hours will be lower.
Who uses it and why
The Continental is a manufacturing schedule at heart: steel mills, foundries, paper and packaging plants, food processors, glass and cement works, and any plant that runs continuously on 8-hour shifts. Utilities and water treatment plants use it too. It predates the move to 12-hour shifts, and plants that kept 8-hour shifts for safety or union reasons often kept the Continental with them.
Its supporters value the shorter 8-hour day, the fact that everyone works every shift equally, and the predictable 28-day calendar. Its detractors point at the seven-day blocks, which mean seven consecutive nights once a cycle, and at two-day breaks that are barely long enough to recover before the next block.
