How it works — the 2-2-3, counted and priced
Every pattern here is a repeating cycle of shifts and off days. The 2-2-3 (Panama) cycle is 14 days long: two on, two off, three on, two off, two on, three off. Count the shifts and you get 7 per cycle; at 12 hours each that is 84 hours per 14 days, an average of 42 hours a week. The same arithmetic prices the others: 4-on-4-off is 4 shifts in 8 days, also 42 a week; DuPont is 14 shifts in 28 days, 42 again, but bunched so that one week is 72 hours and one is zero.
The generator lays that cycle over a real month. Set "Cycle day 1 falls on" to any date you know was the first day of your rotation, pick your crew if your employer staggers crews, and every other day follows from it. Check one more date you are sure about; because the cycle repeats exactly, once it matches, every month after that is right too. Weekly hours are where the pattern gets expensive or cheap. A 2-2-3 averages 42 hours, but no single week is 42. If your employer's workweek starts the day before cycle day 1, the weeks alternate 48 and 36 hours; if it starts on cycle day 1, they alternate 60 and 24. Same 84 hours, different overtime — because the federal threshold is 40 hours per workweek, not per fortnight.
At $30.00/hr under the 40-hour rule, the 48/36 alignment pays $1,560.00 + $1,080.00 = $2,640.00 per two weeks with 8 overtime hours. The 60/24 alignment pays $2,100.00 + $720.00 = $2,820.00 with 20 overtime hours. That is $180.00 more per two weeks — $4,680.00 over a year — for exactly the same shifts, decided by which day payroll starts its week. How many hours a week is a 2-2-3 schedule?
42 hours on average: 7 twelve-hour shifts per 14-day cycle, 84 hours, divided by two weeks. No individual week is 42. Depending on which day your employer's workweek starts, the weeks alternate 36 and 48 hours or 24 and 60 hours. Over a year that averages out to 2,184 hours, against 2,080 for a standard 40-hour job.
How much overtime does a 2-2-3 pay?
Under the federal 40-hour rule it depends on workweek alignment. If the workweek starts the day before cycle day 1, weeks run 48 and 36, so you earn 8 overtime hours every other week — 208 a year. What's the difference between Pitman and 2-2-3?
They share the same 2-on, 2-off, 3-on template. A fixed 2-2-3, often called Panama, keeps each crew on days or on nights permanently, repeating every 14 days. Pitman, as the generator models it, rotates: two weeks of the template on days, then two weeks on nights, a 28-day cycle. Many employers use the names interchangeably, so check whether your crew rotates before choosing a pattern.
How do I line the calendar up with my crew?
Set 'Cycle day 1 falls on' to any date you know was the first day of your rotation — the first of a two-on block on a 2-2-3, the first of the four nights on a DuPont — and pick your crew letter if your employer staggers crews. Check one more date you are sure about; if it shows the right chip, every month after it is right too, because the cycle repeats exactly.
