Is Shrunk a subscription?
No. Shrunk Pro is a one-time purchase of $9.99. You pay once and keep it forever. No recurring charges, no trials that auto-renew.
What do I get for free?
Unlimited barcode scans, the full verdict with size history, the top three cheaper-per-ounce alternatives, and the full Browse tab with verified shrinkflation cases. Free users can use the core scanning experience without limits.
What does Pro unlock?
The Watchlist (daily background sweeps that alert you when any watched product shrinks), unlimited alternatives ranked by cost-per-unit, the Savings Dashboard showing your cumulative protected dollars, and notification preferences (quiet hours, pause, threshold).
Where does the data come from?
Most product lookups hit Open Food Facts, a nonprofit community-maintained database, with UPCitemDB as a fallback. Our curated Browse catalog cites primary sources (mouseprint.org, Consumer Reports, news investigations) for every entry.
Why does my scan say 'insufficient data'?
Open Food Facts only has historical size information for a portion of products — typically items that have been edited multiple times by the community. If neither the imported brand quantity nor the earliest revision differs from the current size, we honestly report that we can't compute a verdict yet. Adding the product on Open Food Facts helps everyone.
Is my data private?
Yes. Shrunk has zero analytics, zero tracking, and zero servers that see your activity. Your watchlist, alerts, and onboarding profile live on your device. The only network calls are to Open Food Facts and our public catalog JSON — both see a barcode, not a person.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Go to Settings in the app → tap "Restore purchase." This re-verifies your purchase with Apple and unlocks Pro on your new device.
Why don't I see prices in the alternatives?
Open Food Facts is a non-commercial database and doesn't track retail pricing reliably. We display unit-size differences (cost-per-ounce when price is available) — actual prices vary by store and region.
Can I suggest a shrinkflation case I noticed?
Yes! Email us at hello@stackcurious.com with the product, the before/after sizes, and a source link (a news article, store receipt photo, or even a r/shrinkflation post with timestamps). Verified cases get added to the curated Browse catalog.
Does Shrunk work outside the US?
The scanner works globally because Open Food Facts is an international database. Pricing/currency in the savings forecast assumes USD — multi-currency support is on the roadmap.
Troubleshooting
The Browse tab is empty
The app ships with a bundled fallback catalog so this shouldn't happen. If it does, pull down on the Browse view to refresh. If still empty, force-quit and relaunch — the bundled JSON loads on app start.
My purchase isn't showing as unlocked
Go to Settings → "Restore purchase." Make sure you are signed into the same Apple ID you used to purchase.
Background watchlist sweeps don't seem to run
iOS controls when background tasks fire — it learns your usage patterns and runs sweeps when convenient (typically once or twice a day). You can also pull down on the Watchlist tab to force a refresh.
The camera permission prompt didn't appear
If you previously denied camera access, iOS won't re-prompt. Go to iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → enable Shrunk.
